Using freefeed from an AI agent

There are two doors in: one you can search feeds through without logging in, and one you log into to manage your subscriptions. Neither returns article text or article lists.

What it can and can’t do

freefeed has two MCP servers that AI agents and chat apps can connect to directly: a public one that needs no login, and an authenticated one you log into.

Neither one returns article text or article lists. Readers still read articles in freefeed’s own reader. What an AI agent can do is find feeds, and manage settings like subscriptions and folders.

Public MCP, no login required (https://freefeed.app/public-mcp)

Without logging in, an agent can:

Authenticated MCP (https://freefeed.app/mcp)

Once you log in over OAuth, an agent can list, create, update, and delete: subscriptions, folders, rules, saved searches, keyword monitors, tags, and saved links (read-it-later), plus import and export OPML.

Article lists, article text, read state, stars, and highlights are out of scope. Use the reader for reading.

Adding freefeed to Claude

In Claude, you add the MCP server’s URL as a custom connector. Open the connector management screen in settings, choose “Add custom connector,” and enter https://freefeed.app/mcp (if you want to manage subscriptions) or https://freefeed.app/public-mcp (if search is all you need).

Adding the login-required /mcp opens a separate authentication screen. Log in with your freefeed account there and choose which operations to allow (read-only, or read and write).

Screen names and steps may change as Claude’s own interface changes. Check Anthropic’s help center for the latest instructions.

Adding freefeed to ChatGPT

In ChatGPT, you first need to turn on Developer mode. Open connector settings, go to advanced settings, and enable Developer mode.

Once it’s on, you can create a custom connector from the connector screen. Enter a name and the MCP server’s URL (https://freefeed.app/mcp or https://freefeed.app/public-mcp) to add it.

Screen names and steps may change as OpenAI’s own interface changes. Check OpenAI’s help center for the latest instructions.

Disconnecting

You can disconnect at any time from “Connected AI apps” in freefeed’s settings. Once disconnected, that agent can no longer act on your account right away.

Logging out of all devices, or deleting your account, also revokes every connection.

Availability

freefeed isn’t currently available from EU member states, the EEA, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland — even through an AI agent.

Letting a browser’s built-in AI use the reader (WebMCP)

In supported browsers (an experimental Chrome feature), a browser’s built-in AI assistant is expected to be able to operate subscriptions and folders directly while freefeed’s reader is open. The scope matches the authenticated MCP — articles are excluded. Anything destructive, like deleting something, always asks for confirmation first.

Reading pages as plain text

A summary of the whole site is at /llms.txt (short version) and /llms-full.txt (full version).

Each page can be fetched as Markdown — headings and body text only, no navigation or ads — by adding .md to the end of its URL, or by sending Accept: text/markdown.

FAQ

Can an AI agent read article text?
No. Neither the public MCP nor the authenticated one returns article text or article lists. Read articles in freefeed’s own reader.
Which MCP should I use — public or authenticated?
The public one if you’re just looking up or exploring feeds. The authenticated one if you actually want to manage subscriptions or folders.
What happens if an AI agent accidentally unsubscribes from everything?
There’s no way to restore removed subscriptions after the fact. Before handing bulk changes to an AI agent, we recommend exporting an OPML backup first.
Is it free to use?
Yes. Neither the authenticated MCP nor the public one has any extra charge.
